The aims of the diabetic foot (DF) program are to provide an update on pathophysiological, clinical,
preventive, and therapeutic aspects based on the latest guidelines and scientific evidence. It aims to
promote an integrated multidisciplinary approach among specialists to manage diabetic foot syndrome
more effectively and comprehensively.
The DF program purposes to talk about the prevention, diagnosis, and management of foot complications
in individuals with diabetes. This program involves education, regular foot exams, and specialized care to
address issues like ulcers, infections, nerve and ischemic damage including through a series of workshops
that follow the principle of hands-on training. They are crucial for reducing amputation rates and
improving the quality of life for people with diabetes.
Main contents:
Scientific updates: sessions focusing on the latest scientific evidence and international guidelines
(updated in 2023).
Multidisciplinary management: emphasis on integration among various medical disciplines, such as
diabetologists, vascular surgeons, foot surgeons, podiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, psychologists,
and nutritionists, to ensure comprehensive patient treatment.
Prevention and treatment: discussion of preventive strategies, such as daily foot inspection and the use
of appropriate footwear, and cutting-edge therapeutic approaches, including conservative surgery,
revascularization, foot management and care, including major bone deformities, innovative therapies of
advanced dressings, and regenerative therapies such as mononuclear cells, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP),
use of amino acids, and autologous cell grafts.
Psychological aspects: attention to psychological support for the patient and family members, given the
disabling nature of the condition, pain (including phantom limb pain), and high risk of depression.
Benefits of the Diabetic Foot Program: Reduce risk of ulcers and infections; Proactive care preventing the
development of ulcers and infections; Decrease amputation rates with early intervention and proper
management; Preventing complications and promoting healthy feet: maintenance of personal mobility
and independence; Improve Quality of Life.
